About ACRE Africa Agriculture and Climate Risk Enterprise Ltd (ACRE Africa), a subsidiary of ZEP-RE is a for-profit social enterprise and designer of risk management solutions for farmers with operations in Africa since 2009. Agriculture and Climate Risk Enterprise Ltd. (ACRE Africa) is a risk management solutions designer linking stakeholders to localized solutions such as insurance and climate change adaptation strategies to reduce agricultural and climate risks. ACRE Africa operates as a licensed insurance intermediary supporting local insurers to offer agricultural insurance across value chains with offices present in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Zambia and projects in Uganda, Ghana, Malawi, Senegal, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, and Somali. As a for profit social business company pursuing financial sustainability and social impact, ACRE endeavors to work sustainably through its partnerships to continuously bridge this protection gap for farmers in Africa.
JOB PURPOSE
ACRE is seeking an experienced, passionate, and visionary Digital Systems Manager to lead our Digital and Technology team and spearhead the development of our next-generation digital ecosystems. The ideal candidate will play a pivotal role in translating agricultural needs into robust software solutions, ensuring our technology ecosystem effectively serves farmers and strengthens ACRE Africa’s market position
RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Core Responsibilities:
– Lead ACRE IT team and manage IT partnerships to define and implement digital ecosystems, platforms, and applications.
– Collaborate with product owners and stakeholders to translate business requirements into robust and user-friendly software solutions.
– Monitor and manage IT budgets, track project progress, and report on resource utilization.
Implement and update IT risk management frameworks, ensuring data security and compliance.
– Drive process automation initiatives to improve efficiency and reduce operational costs.
– Foster a collaborative and innovative IT culture within ACRE Africa.

Team Leadership and Management:
– Lead and motivate a team of developers, IT system specialists, and other technical staff.
– Foster a collaborative work environment, build strong relationships within the team, and manage conflict constructively.
– Develop and implement team performance metrics and ensure ongoing performance improvement.

Project Management and Budget Control:
– Manage multiple IT projects concurrently from conception to completion, within budget and deadlines.
– Establish project scope, define requirements, develop project plans, and delegate tasks to team members.
– Monitor project progress, identify, and mitigate risks, and adjust as needed to ensure successful project delivery.
– Manage team budgets effectively, track expenses, and prepare budget reports for senior management.

IT Infrastructure and Resource Management:
– Oversee and manage ACRE Africa’s IT infrastructure, including servers, networks, security systems, and cloud resources.
– Ensure optimal performance and availability of ACRE websites, social media platforms, monitoring and evaluation systems, email platforms, and IT subscriptions.
– Implement and maintain data security and privacy best practices to protect sensitive information.
– Proactively identify and address technical issues, troubleshoot problems, and implement effective solutions.

Strategic IT Planning and Implementation:
– Collaborate with senior management to develop ACRE Africa’s digital strategy and align IT priorities with organizational goals.
– Research and evaluate new technologies and tools that can improve efficiency, effectiveness, and user experience.
– Lead the implementation of new IT systems and applications, ensuring smooth integration with existing infrastructure.
– Develop and implement policies and procedures for IT resource utilization and access control.

Communication and Reporting:
– Communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences, both internally and externally.
– Prepare clear and concise reports on project progress, IT performance, and budget utilization.
– Present technical information in a way that is understandable to non-technical stakeholders.
– Build and maintain positive relationships with key stakeholders across the organization.      
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
– Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or related field, MBA or equivalent business qualification will be an added advantage.
– Minimum 6 years of experience in managing and delivering IT projects within a fast-paced environment.
– Proven track record of success in leading and motivating IT teams to achieve project goals.
– Experience working in the agricultural or insurance sector (highly desirable).  

COMPETENCIES AND ATTRIBUTES
– Strong understanding of software development methodologies (Agile, Waterfall, DeVops, Lean Startup, Prototype, Hybrid, etc) and project management best practices.
– Experience in various technology areas, including web development, mobile app development, cloud computing, and data management.
– Familiarity with Insurtech trends and digital solutions relevant to the agricultural sector.
– Excellent communication, presentation, and negotiation skills, with the ability to bridge the gap between technical and business teams.
– Analytical and problem-solving skills, adept at identifying and resolving complex IT challenges.
– Experience working with and managing IT vendors and suppliers.
– Strong financial acumen and budgeting skills.
– Understanding of IT risk management and compliance frameworks.
– Knowledge of data security and privacy regulations.
– Experience with process automation tools and methodologies

Work Environment: Office based.

JOB PURPOSE
ACRE is seeking an experienced and passionate Crop Modeler/Agronomist to join our team and play a vital role in utilizing sophisticated crop models for diverse purposes. Including assessing risk for informed policy development, supporting underwriting and claims teams, and generating impactful agronomic advisories for smallholder farmers.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:
– Develop and maintain accurate and reliable crop models for various crops and regions, incorporating weather, soil, and agronomic practices.
– Analyze historical and real-time data to assess crop yield potential, predict variability, and identify potential risks for insured crops.
– Utilize crop models to simulate yield outcomes under diverse scenarios, considering weather, crop varieties, and soil conditions.
– Translate model outputs into practical agronomic advisories and GAPs tailored to the specific needs of smallholder farmers.
– Collaborate with underwriters, claims adjusters, and extension agents to interpret model outputs, analyze crop losses, and support claim evaluation.
– Provide technical expertise on agronomic practices, crop growth stages, and environmental conditions to internal and external stakeholders.
– Collaborate with extension agents, NGOs, and farmer organizations to disseminate agronomic advisories and GAPs through accessible channels.
– Evaluate the effectiveness of disseminated advisories and GAPs through field trials, farmer surveys, and refine models and recommendations based on feedback.Stay up to date on industry trends, regulations, and scientific advancements in crop modeling and agronomy.Create and present technical reports, data visualizations, and presentations to communicate findings to diverse audiences.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
– Master’s degree in Agronomy, Crop Science, or a closely related field, with a strong emphasis on crop modelling.
– Minimum 5 years of experience in developing and applying crop models for agricultural applications or related fields.
– Proven track record of data analysis, statistical modelling, and interpreting complex datasets.  

COMPETENCIES AND ATTRIBUTES
Crop Modelling:
– Understanding of various crop models and their underlying principles (empirical, mechanistic, statistical).
– Proficiency in using crop modelling software and tools.
– Understanding of environmental factors influencing crop growth that impact crop performance.
– Ability to analyze large datasets from various sources (weather stations, remote sensing, yield records)

Agronomy:
– A strong understanding in crop physiology and growth stages Familiarity of best agronomic practices for various crops and regions.
– Experience in conducting field trials and collecting agronomic data.
– Understanding of soil science and water management.

Agricultural Insurance and Risk Assessment:
– Familiarity with agricultural insurance products and risk assessment methodologies.

Others
– Programming skills (e.g., Python, R) for data analysis and potentially modifying or developing crop models.
– Geographical information systems (GIS) experience for analyzing spatial data and mapping risk across regions.Statistical knowledge for analyzing field trial data, model validation, and uncertainty quantification.
– Good communication and interpersonal skills.
