Me and Mrs. Aziza from Dodoma, Tanzania have been farming for more than eight years. However, it is only in the recent past that they learned about crop insurance, and how it can enable them access finances so that can invest more in their agriculture activities. Through the partnership between ACRE Africa, Vision Fund Tanzania and The Great African Food Company GAFCO, Mrs. Aziza and her husband have been able to access quality inputs such as seeds, fertilizer and chemicals bundled with crop insurance. This has helped them expand their farming activities from five to 23 acres. Having insurance has enabled them confidently take the risk in expanding their acreage.
Additionally, the couple has also expanded from subsistence farming (maize and beans) to cash crops such as sunflower and safflower.
“In the past, whenever there was drought, we were often worried about having enough food to take us up to the next season. Sometimes, we would borrow food from family and close friends so that we could feed ourselves and our children. This year, the season was not good because of the drought; most of the crops were badly damaged. However, we are not worried because we are confident that insurance will compensate us for the loss we have incurred,” said Mrs. Aziza.
