1 Description of the service
The Service is an insurance service that aims to provide a cushion that protects farmers against weather damage and other specified risks during the crop season. It provides compensation upto a maximum of the sum insured during the crop season via M-Pesa in the event of damage to crop or poor harvest caused by insured risks.
1.1 This insurance is only available during a particular crop season related to maize crop.
1.2 Purchase of card does not automatically register the farmer as a user of the Service. To utilize the Service you are required to purchase the card and – activate the service by sending the unique code found on the card once you are at the farm and are about to plant. A satellite of the National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration, which produces the Africa Rainfall Climatology product, will measure rainfall. The satellite data is publicly available through: www.ftp://ftp.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/fews/AFR_CLIM/ARC2/. The measurements are made in a 10 by 10 km grid and will be the only factor to determine if there was a crop failure as a result of drought at germination or drought at vegetative or drought at flowering stage and excess rain only at pre-harvest stages
1.3 Please activate your Bima_Pima card by sending the unique code found on the scratch card once you are on your farm. The point from where you send the valid code will be assumed to be your farm location. The insurance cover will only be considered after you have received a USSD notification for successful registration.
